Why creating a new font?

A few months ago, I sent an email around asking if you have ever thought of designing a font and what was holding you back. I received hundreds of replies saying YES! If you were one of them, you're not alone!

I also asked what is it that makes you postpone this project and these were some of the reasons:
☛ "I don't know the tools to actually make it into a font"
☛ "learning new software already seems overwhelming"
☛ "studying font making is too expensive and time-consuming"
☛ "creating an alphabet with figures, punctuation, and so on seems overly complicated"
☛ "I feel very unconfident about doing it without support"

I replied to each one of these e-mails and took notes to incorporate these comments into my upcoming course in display type Letter&Co. However, I want to take the time to address one very important question right here, right now. I feel this cannot wait any other minute:

"Why creating a new font if the world already has so many of them?"

I've heard this question many times and I think it's time to give my personal answer to it. I believe that there shouldn't be anything holding us back from creating new work and exploring new creative playground, so I decided to create a video to answer this question directly. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Introducing Germany’s first Type Design Program

TwitterBerlinTypeAnnouncementI'm thrilled to announce that together with Dan Reynolds we’ll be organizing a hands-on, full-time, multi-week international type design program in Berlin. Participants will make their own typefaces and fonts using the latest digital tools and the best analog letter-making techniques. In addition to that, we’ll host several shorter workshops and a public lecture series that will be open to the public.

Kicking off next summer, our call for submissions will open early 2016. Visit the website and subscribe to the newsletter to get all the updates.

I was an invited lecturer at HS Anhalt. I conducted a Short Project in Type DEsign, where the students learned type design basics and the process of making a font. The results of the project are documented in this blog where the resulting fonts are available for free download under the open font license.
